Consultation
Your surgical history, skin condition, and goals are reviewed in full. Areola size, shape, placement, and color tone are discussed and planned together before any work begins.
PERSONALIZED APPROACH
3D areola restoration tattooing uses pigment applied in carefully layered shading and highlight techniques to simulate the depth, dimension, and natural color variation of an areola. Unlike flat pigment application, the 3D technique creates the visual illusion of projection and texture — producing results that appear remarkably natural in both appearance and dimension. The service can recreate an areola where one no longer exists, enhance a faded or asymmetric existing areola, or add a nipple projection appearance in cases where surgical nipple reconstruction was not performed.
Areola restoration tattooing is appropriate for patients who have completed breast reconstruction, mastectomy, gender-affirming chest surgery, or other procedures that have altered the areola or nipple-areola complex. The skin in the treatment area should be fully healed — typically at least one year post-surgery. Radiation-treated skin may require additional evaluation. Patients with unrealistic expectations or active healing concerns are counseled accordingly during consultation. This service is appropriate for patients of all genders.
Your consultation includes a thorough review of your surgical history, current skin condition, and goals. Color matching and areola size, shape, and placement are carefully planned with your input before any tattooing begins. Most areola restoration sessions take 60 to 90 minutes per side. The pigment will appear darker immediately after treatment and softens to its true color as healing progresses over four to six weeks. A follow-up session is typically scheduled to refine color and symmetry once healing is complete — and is considered part of the treatment process.

Using reference imagery and your anatomy as a guide, a personalized design is created and color is matched to complement your skin tone and, where applicable, your existing areola on the opposite side.

Every woman’s health journey is unique. Here are answers to some of the most common questions about our approach to women’s health, hormone care, treatment options, and personalized care at Alpenaura.
Yes. Areola restoration tattooing can be performed with or without a surgically reconstructed nipple. In cases without a physical nipple, tattooing techniques can simulate the visual appearance of a nipple and areola complex using three-dimensional pigment shading, creating a natural-looking result that photographs and appears realistic in most lighting.
The treatment area should be fully healed and stable — typically at least one year after the most recent surgery. For patients who received radiation, additional healing time may be required. Your provider will assess readiness during your consultation.
Areola restoration can be performed on one or both sides. For patients with one natural areola, we carefully match pigment color, size, and shape to the existing side to create the best possible symmetry.
Results are long-lasting but will gradually lighten over time. Most patients find their results remain satisfying for several years before a maintenance touch-up may be desired. Sun exposure and skin characteristics affect longevity.
Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), health insurance plans that cover mastectomy are required to cover prosthetic devices and reconstructive surgery, which may include nipple-areola tattooing. We recommend checking with your insurance provider directly. Our team can assist with documentation questions.
